I was surprised last night, not by the winners, but how most of the losers put up a fight. Connie Finnan will be ruing his missed opportunity to knock out James Wade; he had The Machine on the ropes and couldn’t knock him out. And Wes Newton showed a fighting spirit he’s not shown for a while. Ronnie Baxter put up a fight against Simon Whitlock, even if the scoreline doesn’t reflect that, and Paul Nicholson had his chances against Phil Taylor. So while the favourites all got through, it wasn’t plain sailing, and it made for an entertaining night of darts.

The second round finishes tonight, and we’re got four short-priced favourites in Adrian Lewis, Dave Chisnall, Andy Hamilton and Michael van Gerwen. In a tournament that’s mostly went the way of the favourites, will all four deliver?
