Premier League Darts 2013 Night Eight (Glasgow) Premium Picks.

Apologies for the late delivery of last weeks’ Premium Picks – technical difficulties caused me no end of grief. Still, we’re back and the Premier League heads to Glasgow. It’s going to be a great night, with every match significant in one way or another. We have Andy Hamilton and Adrian Lewis trying to keep their winning ways going and climb into a safer position come relegation time. Both men are playing extremely solid darts at the moment, and you have to like the way Lewis has overcome a bad start to get some points on the board, when it looked like he would amass 0 points at one stage. And Hamilton is just showing no sign of the nerves he had shown at times in his debut year in 2012. Simon Whitlock and Robert Thornton will also be eager for the same reasons as Lewis and Hamilton. Both men will want to get back to winning ways after promising starts. Whitlock’s defeat to Hamilton was thanks to an inconsistent performance from the Aussie, while Thornton wasn’t able to grind out a point like he has in a few games this year. And then it’s the main event, 2nd versus 3rd, Taylor against Van Barneveld. What more do I have to say? Bottom of the table clash next, as Newton takes on Gary Anderson. Both men got thumped last week, but both men will fancy their chances of getting 2 points on the scoreboard here. I don’t think Newton’s good enough to take on the elite consistently, while Anderson’s form is so woeful at times that he’s not even fit to lace Newton’s boots sometimes! Finally, another cracker with James Wade taking on Michael van Gerwen. 3rd in the world taking on 4th in the world, and it could end up being this year’s fierce rivalry if they can keep some kind of form up. Honestly, you know I’m never that excited for a night of Premier League Darts, but this has the hallmarks of a classic – so much to play for and 5 matches that, for once, look great on paper.

Adrian Lewis Vs Andy Hamilton.

A tale of two Premier Leagues for these men. Lewis was not at the races for the first few weeks, then he got a win over Phil Taylor, and it set him on his way, picking up a point against Gary Anderson and a win over Robert Thornton. Andy Hamilton also managed a win over The Power, and he followed it up by beating Simon Whitlock. Both men are playing solid darts at the moment, but Lewis’ form tends to go in and out, while Hamilton is just nice and consistent, sometimes showing greatness.

Simon Whitlock Vs Robert Thornton.

Not a great week for either man last week, as their performances were no on par with previous weeks in the Premier League. Still, they have everything to play for, and, like the previous match, both men will be confident of picking up two points here. Hard to split them, as I think they’re playing around the same level at the moment. It might take some magic for one of them to get ahead of the other and stay there.

Phil Taylor Vs Raymond van Barneveld:

A big match for both men here, as they’ll want to get some momentum going. Good results for both men last week, as I think Barney’s draw against James Wade was a sign he’s not just having some “flash in the pan” form. It could be tight, as Taylor hasn’t been punishing the better players in the league so far, and Barney’s just doing his thing, firing in a lot of maximums along the way.

Gary Anderson Vs Wes Newton.

This won’t be a classic, both men struggling for form and desperate for some points to get them off the bottom of the table. Neither man has managed to string any kind of run together, and Anderson’s 7-1 defeat against MVG last week won’t have done the Scotsman any favours. Newton’s confidence won’t be great either after a humbling from Phil Taylor. Still, Anderson managed 3 180s in 8 legs against MVG, so he’s still getting in the mix with the scoring, which will help him.

Gary Anderson to beat Wes Newton: 10/11 @

Recommend: 2 units.

Michael van Gerwen Vs James Wade:

This will be tight. MVG has been playing some great darts, as expected, but James Wade has also shown some solid form over recent weeks – although it has been his doubling that’s seen him through. If MVG can get his doubles first or second time, Wade might not get a sniff if his scoring isn’t up to par. However, Wade’s scoring is getting better week by week and this will be nip and tuck.

Michael van Gerwen to draw with James Wade: 4/1 @

Recommend: 1 unit.
