Premier League Darts 2014 Week 14 Premium Picks

Last week’s Premier League Darts results heralded the end of the line for some players’ play-off chances, while it became a race between 3 men for the final 2 play-off places. Michael van Gerwen sits at the top of the tree, although his 7-4 defeat at the hands of Gary Anderson means Raymond van Barneveld has joined him on 20 points. Van Gerwen’s 97.48 and 50% finishing just wasn’t enough in comparison to Anderson’s 100.8 and 50% finishing. That win kept the Scot’s play-off ambitions alive. Barney joined MvG at the top with a 6-6 draw with Phil Taylor. Barney’s 95.63 average wasn’t great, but it was enough to grind out a draw, with Taylor averaging 95.69. Both men doubled in the mid-40%, so it wasn’t a Barney/Power classic. Taylor was on double-duty last week, and he demolished Dave Chisnall to end Chizzy’s play-off hopes and also help tighten his grasp on a spot in the season finale. Taylor won 7-2, averaged 101.98 to Chisnall’s 92.65 and hit 47% of his doubles to Chisnall’s 22%. Chisnall also lost to Robert Thornton last week, with the Scot hitting 9 180s, to give him a 104.30 average. Chisnall’s 3 180s got his average up to 97.99, but his scoring just wasn’t enough to trouble Thornton. The night’s other match was a 6-6 draw between Adrian Lewis and Peter Wright. The averages were around the 98 mark for both men, they hit around 30% of their doubles, so a draw was the right result. That point was not exactly what Wright would have wanted, but he remains in fourth, with two weeks to go. Lewis’s dreams of Premier League glory are finished for another year.

No double-duty for anyone tonight, and the Newcastle crowd will be getting short-changed as they only get 4 matches compared to the 5 of previous weeks. Not that they’ll mind, of course, as the quality is of a high standard. We start with Gary Anderson continuing his chase of a play-off spot against Dave Chisnall, who has been mathematically eliminated from the play-off picture. Anderson needs at least a point to give him a chance in the final week, and he knows a win will be ideal with Peter Wright facing Michael van Gerwen next week. Speaking of Peter Wright, he has The Power tonight. Taylor wins, he’s into the play-offs. Wright wins, he keeps his play-off dreams alive and kicking. Robert Thornton looks to keep his winning run going from the weekend, where he won both Players Championship events, as he faces Adrian Lewis. Both men have been eliminated from the play-off race, so this is merely for some prize money and pride. The night’s other game sees the two men who have qualified already for the play-offs, Raymond van Barneveld and Michael van Gerwen, face each other, with the winner likely to finish the regular season in the top slot. So, one or two variables in play tonight, and it should be exciting.
