This week, the PGA has the prestigious Players Championship, which takes place at the TPC Sawgrass, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

This is an event every player wants to win. A 144 player field, the winner of the tournament will take home the largest prize in golf. On top of that, they get 80 points in the world rankings, and various other bonuses.

Last year, the German Martin Kaymer took it down. He managed to pip Jim Furyk by one stroke although he almost blew it on the last day in a thriller. Jordan Spieth played that event and started off strong – but two poor days, especially a 74 on round 2, cost him.

The year prior, Tiger Woods took it down. That was the 2nd time he won it. He had previously win it – yikes – all the way back in 2011. I feel old.

The only three times winner was Jack Nicklaus, who win the event in 1974, 1976 and 1978.

Tiger Woods has been going through a lot lately – the breakup with Lindsey Vonn, and it’s the anniversary of the death of his father. However he will be participating in this tournament.

The Players Championship 2015 Betting Odds:

  1. Jordan Spieth: 7/1
  2. Rory McIlroy: 7/1
  3. Henrik Stenson: 18/1
  4. Justin Rose: 20/1
  5. Jason Day: 25/1
  6. Jim Furyk: 25/1
  7. Dustin Johnson: 30/1
  8. Sergio Garcia: 33/1
  9. Hideki Matsuyama: 33/1
  10. Jimmy Walker: 35/1

For those wondering – Tiger Woods is a highly priced 40/1.

The Players Championship Betting Tip #1: Rory McIlroy

Since winning The Masters, Jordan Spieth is in somewhat of a rut. A rut for him that is. He was disappointing at the WGC Match Play, and he got 11th in the Heritage. That was more down to a bad first day than anything else.

He goes into this one tied as favourite with Rory McIlroy. McIlroy has also been in a rut, but his form has picked up. What’s key about Rory is he is a strong momentum player. When he starts playing good golf he becomes practically unstoppable. And that’s what he has been doing lately. 4th at the Masters, he was the winner of the WGC Match Play, and now we have the Players Championship – an event he has never won.

We will be going with Rory McIlroy to win the Players Championship, based off his momentum.

The Players Championship Betting Tip #2: Paul Casey

One golfer who has really stepped up his game this year is Paul Casey. We don’t know what got him going – but he showed his form in February with 2nd and 3rd places in the Northern Trust Open and Honda Classic. He stuttered the next couple of tournaments, but then came out rocking in the Shell Houston Open, Masters and Match Play.

Casey is a bit of a concern as he’s someone who can drop off the face of the earth in terms of the leaderboard with ease. However he’s also on a strong run of form – and the Players Championship is the ultimate goal. His best place in here was 10th and that was over a decade ago – but he’s still worth a punt.

Half unit bet on Paul Casey to win. Bet it E/W so we get cash if he comes in the top 5.

The Players Championship Betting Tip #3: Lee Westwood

Finally we will go with the 40/1 Lee Westwood.

Coming into this on the back of solid form he’s had some good places here over the last few years. 4th, 8th and 6th in 3 of his last 4 Players Championships.

Another won worth a small bet.
