Not a bad start at all to our BDO World Championship tipping. We went 4-3 and we have a profit of +5.17 units, so we’re flying already.

We missed the first couple of second round matches, but never mind that, since we’ve got more bets to come in this tournament and more profit to be made. The coverage starts later today on the BBC, so there is sadly no early afternoon session. Instead of that, we’ll have Bobby George gurning with some D-list celebrity and a replay of last night’s matches. Actually, that’s not a bad thing if we can watch that epic Adams vs Walton encounter.

Martin Phillips vs Joey ten Berg.

Mark Phillips came through his first round match against seeded Mark Barilli with relative ease, with a nice 3-0 win. Joey ten Berg also came through his match 3-0, although Shaun Griffiths gave him a bit of trouble, so the scoreline is even more impressive considering the pressure his opponent put him under.

I think Phillips has a bit too much experience for Joey ten Berg and his heavy scoring and confident finnishing should see him through. Ten Berg is no doubt a class act, but like a lot of the fast playing Dutch players, he is prone to a lot of low scores to go with his big numbers and you can’t go that against someone that scores as heavily as Phillips. If Phillips can get the lead, there’s no reason why he can’t win 4-2, or 4-1, so the handicap looks a nice bet indeed.

Alan Norris vs Garry Thompson.

Garry Thompson was a 3-1 winner against debutant Arno Merk in the first round and, to be honest, I think that scoreline flattered him somewhat. He didn’t play all that well and he was lucky his opponent lacked any real experience. His second round opponent, Alan Norris, had a huge win over the in-form Ross Montgomery. Norris averaged better than his opponent and showed a lot of nerve to take out Montgomery, while Thompson just didn’t impress even when not pressured bhy his young German opponent. The bookies make this close, but I think Norris might take this relatively easily if he can reproduce his first round form.

Stuart Kellett vs Jan Dekker.

Two young men who impressed me in the first round face off. One has realistic title ambitions, while the other is looking to start making a name for himself in the BDO. Stuart Kellett is the number 2 seed and the way he played against Darryl Fitton shows he means business and will be a tough customer. Jan Dekker had a great win over the seeded Scott Mitchell. Dekker’s average was a little bit off of Kellett’s and add to that Kellett’s finishing and it’s going to be unbelievably tough for Dekker. In fact, it’s so tough the bookies have Kellett a 1/5 favourite. The handicap is -2.5 and that’s about right.

All the markets seem quite tight and there’s no real value to be had.

Recommend: No bet.

Dave Chisnall vs Gary Robson.

Last year’s runner-up, Dave Chisnall, was a little bit fortuitous to make it through to the second round. Steve West blew a 2-0 lead in the final set to lose to Chisnall in the tie-break. It doesn’t look like Chisnall is up to the same standard as he was last year, or even some of the form he had shown at the Grand Slam of Darts in November. Gary Robson looked dangerous in his first roud match, taking out a 170 in his 3-0 win.

The bookies make Chisnall quite a hot favourite, but it was Robson with the better average in the first round and it’s Robson we’ll be looking to get the value on, as Chisnall just doesn’t look at the race. Yes, if last year’s Dave Chisnall turns up, Robson will be in trouble, but it doesn’t look like he’s there yet and Robson has the experience to capitalise on this.

And that’s your lot for Tuesday’s second round matches in the BDO World Championships. Four matches, three bets and one extremely interesting night, which is sure to have its share of drama. Let’s hope the drama involves Dave Chisnall being knocked out and Martin Phillips coasting to an easy victory! Happy betting!
