Eight tips for day one of the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

#1 Baylor vs. #8 North Carolina Betting Tips:

Baylor is probably the weakest #1 seed in this tournament and they aren’t even the favored team to get out of their region. That puts them on notice from here on out and I don’t like them as a favorite here. This team had a ton of injuries and are not the same team that started the season 15-0.

North Carolina had a great end to the season winning six of their last seven and had one of the most impressive wins of round one as they completely dominated Marquette. They are getting +5.5 here and I think they will make this close, and might even upset.

Pick: Bet North Carolina +5.5

#1 Kansas vs. #9 Creighton Betting Tips:

The line is a bit high here, but if I was ranking the upset potential of these games I would have this one at the very bottom.

Creighton has the better defense, but it’s not that much better while Kansas blows them away in every single offensive category. They score more, they shoot better, they offensive rebound better, and they turn the ball over less.

Covering big spreads gets harder as things go on, but Kansas should handle it here.

Pick: Bet Kansas -11.5

#11 Michigan vs. #3 Tennessee Betting Tips:

Tennessee probably should’ve been a higher seed in this tournament, but they had one of the biggest wins of the first round with an 88-56 win.

Michigan pulled off an upset yesterday as they overcome a seven point half-time deficit to win 75-63. The game went over, the fifth time in six games they’ve done that. All six of those games finished with totals of 138 or more.

That’s what we’re looking to happen again here. Tennessee can score and I think Michigan will be able to hang with them long enough to put us in the over.

#4 Providence vs. #12 Richmond Betting Tips:

Richmond pulled the upset over Iowa, but looking at the box score and I’m not sure this counts for anything beyond bad luck for Iowa. Iowa had more rebounds, more offensive rebounds, and were only -1 in turnovers, but they shot terribly. Only 36% from the field and 21% from three. Iowa really got no help outside of Keegan Murray and Patrick McCaffery who made 15 of the 24 field goals.

I don’t see that being an issue here as Providence has a far more balanced offensive attack. This is a team that looks for the best shot and spreads the scoring. They also have the better defensive team and they should avoid the upset.

#4 Saint Mary’s vs. #5 UCLA Betting Tips:

There has been a ton of overtime early in this tournament and if I was picking one to go to overtime in this round, this would be it.

I kind of like Saint Mary’s with the points here, but I just think this one is going to be close and I’m not going to be betting that. Instead, I am taking the over here. The total is set low at 126 which is weird to me because both of these offenses averaged nearly 69+ per game. Throw in the OT potential and this looks like an easy over.

#15 Saint Peter’s vs. #7 Murray State Betting Tips:

Saint Peter’s pulled the biggest upset of the tournament by defeating #2 Kentucky. They face Murray State here who barely held on against San Francisco, needing overtime to do it.

I’d love to see the upset here again, but I am not going to bet on the spread one way or the other.

I will, however, be pounding the over in this one. Both of the aforementioned games went to overtime and saw each team score 85 or more. In regulation, each team scored 71 and if they do that again here that will hit the over. Murray State is one of the better offenses out there and Saint Peter’s proved they could hang in the last round.

#4 Arkansas vs. #12 New Mexico State Betting Tips:

Arkansas managed to hold on against Vermont in the first round and I see that as the tougher match-up for them. Vermont had a really dangerous offense and I just don’t see that with New Mexico State.

This is the toughest opponent that New Mexico State has faced all season and I think that will show up in the final box score.

#9 Memphis vs. #1 Gonzaga Betting Tips:

Memphis showed the kind of potential that they have been teasing all season in their 64-53 win over Boise State in the first round.

Gonzaga got a 93-72 win in their first round match-up against #16 Georgia State. The win was both impressive and unimpressive as they were up only two at the half, but then had the enormous second half. The thing I’d worry about for them is giving a team a window like that. Georgia State isn’t the kind of team that was going to exploit it, but Memphis could.

I think Gonzaga wins here, but the line is just a bit too high in my opinion. If the good version of Memphis shows up they can compete with anyone.
